“Purse sale begins tonight” |
| Posted: 02 Dec 2010 07:28 PM PST Still looking for a holiday gift? Hundreds of new and gently used purses will be on display today and Saturday at the Historic Brownsville Museum in a fundraising sale to benefit literacy programs. Tickets for the second annual Mega Purse Sale are $20 for tonight's V.I.P. event, which will be held from 6-8 p.m. and will include live music, refreshments, door prizes, silent auctions — and first dibs on a panoply of high-quality handbags, many from major designer labels such as Coach, Dooney& Bourke and Kate Spade. Admission for Saturday's 9-to-noon sale is $2. At both events, no bag will be more than $75, and the average price will range from $10-$20. Some will be as low as $1. The Brownsville Herald and the Brownsville Literacy Center worked together to organize the sale, collecting quality new and gently used purses, pocketbooks and totes donated by residents and retailers. All proceeds will go to Brownsville literacy programs. About 43 percent of adults in Cameron County do not have basic prose literacy skills, which means they cannot read material such as newspaper articles, editorials and brochures, according to the Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning at Texas A&M University. Literacy-based programs offered by The Herald aim to promote the use of newspapers as an educational tool in the classroom. Reading-based programs at the city's literacy center provide resources to adults and children in the community.
