Starting in January, and continuing through all of 2011, the East Norwalk Library will devote a special display area to document, with pictures and other forms of graphic elements, the people places and "things" of East Norwalk as part of the East Norwalk Improvement Association's 101st Anniversary. The project, being undertaken by the Historical Committee of the East Norwalk Library Foundation, will exhibit groups of photographs depicting life in East Norwalk from the late 1800s.

In addition to the photographs, newspaper clippings, copies of paintings, drawings and other art forms will chronicle the way of life as it was in our community through the years.

Many of the pictures -- both of people and places -- will need to be identified as to who is in the photograph and where the photograph was taken. The public is invited to visit the East Norwalk Library "ENIA 101" project, from time to time to help identify the unmarked pictures. Additionally, other appropriate pictures, written memories and other items may be given or loaned to the East Norwalk Library for inclusion in the display.

Periodically, during the year, a selection of pictures and other materials on display will be published in book form, which, at the end of 2011, will serve as a printed record of the past 101 plus years of East Norwalk life, activity, places, people, and businesses.

The progress of this project will be reported here in "Inside East Norwalk" as well as on the East Norwalk Library website -- www.eastnorwalklibrary.org.

"artist" and the "work" displayed in the Children's Library.

Early beginnings

In the handwritten Minutes book of the East Norwalk Improvement Association, the following paragraph was recorded for the its "Annual Report for the Year 1914-1915:

"On January 9, the Library Dept. opened a free library in Mr. Rundle's Bakery, with 100 books, the gift of the Norwalk Library, and 60 books, loaned by the Conn. Public Library Committee. Shelves for the books were loaned by friends.

"The number of members enrolled, the opening day, was 24. Membership Sep. 30, 1915, was 318 and the number of books 768. All books have been the gift of friends except 12, which were purchased by the Committee at an auction sale.

"The Library has been open 77 afternoons, with an average circulation of 42 books. Total expenses, not including postage and paste, have been $9.30. Only $5.31 of this has been drawn from the Association treasury. The remainder, with bills for postage and paste, has been paid out of the receipts from overdue books."

The East Norwalk Library -- has come a long way these past 96 years -- and continues to grow in its services to its community.

So far, more than 137 children have participated in the program with more than eight different dogs enjoying being read to.

After the session, the children receive a certificate of participation and get to keep the book they have read. To participate on any Saturday, call the East Norwalk Library at 203-838-0408 ext 100, or email: mail@eastnorwalklibrary.org
