CLAREMONT - Community Senior Services in Claremont is planning a holiday boutique just in time for the seasonal shopping quests to begin.

The nonprofit is celebrating 35 years of connecting people, information and resources to the communities throughout the Inland Valley. The goal has and continues to be to help enrich the lives of older adults.

The boutique is set for Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Community Senior Services office, 141 Spring St.

"This boutique offers families an opportunity to donate items they no longer need to help support other seniors," said Sandee Hayden, director of the nonprofit's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

"A gentleman who attended the Family Caregiver Support Group in Chino while caring for his wife who recently passed away due to Alzheimer's disease, is donating her handbags, scarves, jewelry and watches in appreciation of the support he and his family received from this group."

Featured items will include handcrafted button picture frames and aprons.

"Everything is very affordable, with prices starting at $5. This is our second holiday boutique. People apparently liked it last year and asked if we could do it again. This also is a great chance for people to see what we do and how we try to help seniors. We believe strongly in helping people clean out their closets, so we can use things that people love but no longer need. We will recycle, refresh and restyle everything."

A silent auction is scheduled with such items as a $100 gift card to the Diamond Center of Claremont and a Dooney Bourke handbag. Janie Duke will demonstrate Mary Kay beauty products and will donate a portion of her profits to the Community Senior Services.

And the DoubleTree Hotel in Claremont is baking up its chocolate chip cookies for everyone.

The boutique is seen as a fundraiser for needed vital services to the community's seniors. And it also will provide an outlet to directly help some individuals in need.

"Community Senior Services staff and volunteers are focusing on giving, and this year we are assembling baskets to be delivered to 50 isolated, fixed-income seniors in our communities," Hayden said.

"We invite you to the boutique and ask that maybe you could bring something to donate to the project."

They are collecting non-perishable food items such as pasta, canned meat or tuna, peanut butter, canned vegetables, candy and other things such as note cards and stamps, lotions, soap and toothpaste. All baskets will be delivered by volunteers who will stay and visit with the recipients.

"I know there are many needs during the holidays, but I think many times seniors are forgotten about. Many live alone and don't have contact with the outside world. These baskets are meant to help," Hayden said.

"The food is very appreciated, but also the little things help, too. One year, a lovely woman asked if she could just have some cotton balls."

The jolly elf himself, Santa, is expected to stop by the boutique to accept donations from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Hayden said he'd be happy to have his photo taken.
